Thalia Rediviva was published some 23 years after Vaughan's previous collection, and most of the poems included in it were certainly written many years before publication. In 1673 Vaughan informed John Aubrey that the book was ready for the press, but it was a further five years before it appeared. The book's full title, as it appears on the title-page, is revealing: “The Pass-Times and Diversions of a Countrey-Muse, In Choice Poems On several Occasions. With Some Learned Remains of the Eminent Eugenius Philalethes. Never made Publick till now”.
