The Weltalter [The Ages of the World] was the title Schelling gave to what he hoped would be his main philosophical work, his answer to Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit and Science of Logic. Begun in 1810, the project gave rise to as many as three or four thousand manuscript pages over the course of the next two decades, though it was never brought to completion. After the recent edition of two volumes from the Berlin archives (a separate archive in Munich was destroyed during a World War II bombing), some 800 pages of the work have been published.
