Numerous other American editions of this novel are listed by Van Winkle up until the publication of his bibliography of Herbert in 1936; subsequent American editions have continued to appear from time to time through the 1990s. The novel was serialized in Graham's American Monthly Magazine in 1851.
This novel is notable, first, because it is the only one of Herbert's four sporting novels to be published under his own name rather than his famous sporting pseudonym, “Frank Forester”.
