The Roman Traitor: A True Tale of the Republic. A Historical Romance. Baltimore: Wm. Taylor & Co., 1846.

The English edition was published in London by Henry Colburn in 1846. Van Winkle notes several later American editions in his bibliography of Herbert.

This historical romance is based on the conflict between Cicero and L. Sergius Cataline for election as Consul of Rome in 62 B. C. Cataline lost the election and was later suspected in a plot to assassinate Cicero. Though not convicted, Cataline went into voluntary exile and allied himself with a small force in Etruria that was in revolt. The rebellion was quickly suppressed, and Cataline was killed.
