The first English edition was published in London by Richard Bentley; see the entry for The Warwick Woodlands. Numerous American editions are listed by Van Winkle up until the publication of his bibliography of Herbert in 1936; subsequent American editions have continued to appear from time to time through the 1990s. Two chapters of the novel were serialized in the New York Spirit of the Times in 1845.

In the ‘Advertisement', or preface, to this novel, Herbert announces that a “slender narrative of plot and story has been interwoven with the precepts, practice, and accidents of woodcraft, which, like its predecessor [
