Although subtitled “Erzählung” (narrative), the rather complex text can be classified as a brief novel. Its appeal is underscored by the fact that in 1975, one year after its publication, the renowned German film directors Volker Schlöndorff and Margarethe von Trotta made it into a highly successful film.
