On April 14, 1913, Susan Glaspell was married to George Cram Cook in Weehawken, New Jersey, just over the Hudson River from New York City. Both native Iowans, they had met in Davenport in 1907 or even earlier, and by 1910 had fallen deeply in love – with one large problem, however, as Cook was already married. Not the kind of woman to be derailed by a love affair, Glaspell had gone about her life – writing and publishing two acclaimed novels, The Glory of the Conquered in 1909 and The Visioning in 1911, spending a year in Paris with her best friend in 1906, living in Colorado in 1909, and traveling extensively between Chicago and New York during 1911-1913.
