The Glory of the Conquered, The Story of a Great Love is Susan Glaspell’s first novel. Published in 1909, the novel brims with the optimism of the Progressive Era. The “great love” mentioned in the novel’s subtitle refers not only to the marriage of the central characters, Ernestine Stanley and Dr. Karl Hubers, but also, on the level of allegory, to a marriage of art and science: Ernestine is a promising young painter, one of her pictures having received acclaim when exhibited in a Paris salon, while Karl is a brilliant medical researcher on the faculty of the University of Chicago; he is expected to cure cancer.
