The Ambassadors was written during 1900-1901, at the start of a dramatically productive period of James’s career which also included The Wings of the Dove (1902) and The Golden Bowl (1904). Although it was written immediately before The Wings of the Dove, the book publication of The Ambassadors was delayed to accommodate its serialisation in twelve instalments in The North American Review during 1903. The complete novel was published later in the same year by Methuen in Great Britain and by Harpers in the United States.
