Mary Shelley's “The Mourner” starts unpromisingly enough for one of her short stories (see Charles Robinson, ed. Mary Shelley: Collected Tales and Stories, Johns Hopkins U.P., 1976: 81-99). Two long paragraphs describing a stretch of artificial lake near Windsor called Virginia Water seem merely to exist for the benefit of the two engravings by J. M. W. Turner which were included in Robinson's edition (see the link below to The University of Maryland's Romantic Circles for an electronic text version of the story and the engravings). “The Mourner” was one of the short stories Mary Shelley published in The Keepsake in the 1820s and 1830s, an expensive gift-book which often included illustrations and drawings …
