George Dandin, published as a three-act comedy in prose, was first performed as a comédie-ballet on 18 July 1668, during the Grand Divertissement Royal de Versailles. At the fête, the French court was celebrating the triumph of Louis XIV over the Spanish at the Franche-Comté, marking the end of the War of Devolution, and the signing of the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in May 1668. The first public performance of the play took place in Paris on 9 November 1668, and from then onwards the work was performed without the musical elements of the comédie-ballet.
