Theodor Storm wrote his novella “Immensee” [“Lake of Bees”] in 1849, the year of the failed German revolution. The text was first published in the anthology Volksbuch auf das Jahr 1850 für Schleswig, Holstein und Lüneburg (1850), while a revised version appeared in Storm's collection Sommer-Geschichten und Lieder [Summer Stories and Poems, 1851]. Other editions followed, and the novella was translated into numerous languages during the author's lifetime. “Immensee” made Storm famous overnight with the reading public, has long been in the literary canon, and is still read around the globe today.
