Uncertain about future directions of work in 1965, Frisch started to collect notes, which over the following six years crystallised into a second major “diary” after Tagebuch 1946-1949 (see separate entry). This differed from the earlier work in the way in which the observation of outer reality and the process of literary creation are more systematically kept apart. Some entries deleted by Frisch in 1972 at proof stage were restored in 1976 for the reprint in his collected works. At a time of fresh political upheaval, the exploration of the interface between public and private demanded new approaches.
