Almost certainly written in 1806, Heinrich von Kleist’s novella, Das Erdbeben in Chili [The Earthquake in Chili] was first published in September 1807 under the title of Jeronimo und Josephe. Eine Scene aus dem Erdbeben zu Chili, vom Jahr 1647 [Jeronimo and Josephe. A Scene from the Earthquake in Chile in the Year of 1647] in Johann Friedrich Cotta’s literary periodical, the Morgenblatt für gebildete Stände.
