Del amor y otros demonios [Of Love and Other Demons], (1994) is set in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, in the mid 18th century. The novel is divided into a prologue and five chapters. The central character, Sierva María de Todos los Ángeles, is bitten by a rabid dog on her twelfth birthday, but survives unharmed while three other victims contract rabies. As medical science is in its infancy in the 18th century, superstition dictates control of prognoses and treatments. Sierva María is the daughter of Ygnacio Alfaro y Dueñas, the Marquis of Casalduero, and of his untitled wife, Bernarda Cabrera.
