Published in the neo-nationalist periodical Nash sovremennik in 1974, Live and Remember (Zhivi i pomni) is the only major work by Rasputin not set in the contemporary period. It does lay claim, however, to be the most tense and dramatically involving of all his writings, and the only one not driven by his own social and environmental agenda, even though it has clear affinities and links with his other writings. Rasputin was awarded a State Prize in 1977 in recognition of this novella.
