Jean Rhys is best known for the five novels she published during her lifetime: Quartet (1929), After Leaving Mr McKenzie (1931), Voyage in the Dark (1934), Good Morning, Midnight (1939), and Wide Sargasso Sea (1966). This corpus of her work has received much critical response, both in the context of European modernism and, more recently, in relation to postcolonial studies. Much less critical attention has been given to Rhys’s short fiction, even though she began her career as a writer with the publication of a collection of stories, The Left Bank and Other Stories (1927), and published two further collections during her lifetime: Tigers are Better-Looking (1969) and Sleep it Off, …
