According to Gandhi himself, the impetus to commence the writing of his autobiography – entitled An Autobiography, or The Story of My Experiments with Truth – came, circa 1921, “at the instance of some of [his] nearest co-workers” (Autobiography 13). However, its production was to be beset by delays. The year 1921 was seminal in Gandhi’s life, marking as it did his wholesale conversion from “staunch [British] loyalist” to “uncompromising disaffectionist and non-co-operator” (Gandhi, Young India 23 March 1922).
