The Wizard of Oz is the title of Salman Rushdie’s monograph on Victor Fleming’s classic children’s film (1939) of the same title. The monograph was published as part of the British Film Institute’s Classics: a series of books commissioned to stand alongside the chosen three-hundred and sixty key films in the history of cinema, a compilation for the National Film and Television Archive. Rushdie was one of the authors invited to present his own insights into a film of his choice. The Wizard of Oz “was my very first literary influence”, he writes in his monograph, that “made a writer out of me” (The Wizard of Oz, British Film Institute, 1992, 18).
