Beryl Bainbridge, born on 21 November 1934 in Lancashire, spent many years of her life in Liverpool, although more recently she has lived in London. Many of her earliest novels treat her childhood experience and life in Liverpool, for example An Awfully Big Adventure and The Dressmaker. Her later novels, however, deal with real persons and real facts in British history. We can describe these novels, such as According to Queeney or Master Georgie, as historical novels, but perhaps the notion “faction”, a term composed of the two words “fact” and “fiction”, is more appropriate to her specific style of historical writing as it is less focused on understanding historical processes and the …
