Un Coup de dés jamais n’abolira le hasard is a visual poem by Stéphane Mallarmé, which exploits typography and the spacing of words on the page in order to create and enhance meaning – and, particularly, to open the poem up to different readings. The poem was first published in preliminary form in the review Cosmopolis in May 1897; preparation of the definitive edition of the poem, which was to be published by Ambroise Vollard (then known primarily as an art dealer), printed by Firmin Didot and accompanied by illustrations by Odilon Redon, was interrupted by the poet’s death in 1898, leaving readers with a series of more or less accurate posthumous editions based on extant proofs.
