Published initially in 1880 and revised definitively in 1897, Vita dei campi [Life in the Fields] is the most celebrated collection of short stories written by Giovanni Verga, both because of its significance in the author’s artistic journey and because of the fame of particular stories. After the Romantic period of his youth, during which he wrote patriotic novels, and his “bourgeois” phase, when he focused on the lives of the urban cultural elite, Verga entered his mature phase with the publication of this volume.
