An eclectic collection of pieces edited and introduced by Elizabeth Bowen’s literary executor Spencer Curtis Brown shortly after her death, Pictures and Conversations has value especially for the Bowen ‘fan’ who wishes to read everything by and about this complex author. The volume includes an article on Bergotte, the novelist from Marcel Proust’s A la Recherche du Temps Perdu, never published “among her own works” according to Brown, and a Nativity play commissioned for performances in Limerick Cathedral, a selection surprising to some Bowen experts, who believed that it “should not be included because it is so different from the work expected” from the author.
