It is often said that The Female Tatler was written Bernard de Mandeville, but whilst Mandeville was probably involved with the paper in some form, and may well have written as many as thirty-two of the paper's more than 100 issues(see our note in Recommended Reading), the authorship of the paper remains a matter of debate. It was published in two separate rival series, which almost certainly had different editors, and the more famous original series almost certainly changed editors half-way through. It has been variously attributed to Delarivier Manley, Thomas Baker and/or Susannah Centlivre, but only on the basis of rather scanty internal evidence and coincidences of timing.
