This was the first of what was to become a minor genre compiling documents and stories of crimes committed by those who nominally passed through Newgate gaol in London. The calendar founded a genre, and itself went through several later revisions (1824, 1826), but is mainly known as a source book for and influence on many later criminal novels, notably those of Ainsworth, Bulwer-Lytton, Dickens and Godwin.
