The Duke of Bourbon and the Marquis of Pesara lead an imperialist-Spanish army to rout the French and Swiss at the battle of Pavia. Francis I of France is taken prisoner to Spain; 14,000 men are slain in battle, including Richard de la Pole, self-styled Earl of Suffolk and pretender to the English throne. Charles V becomes master of Italy, since he soon regains Milan and Genoa. In the battle the Spanish infantry first use muskets.
