Archduke Charles (later Emperor Charles V) succeeds as King of
Spain on the death of Ferdinand I of Aragon (-1556), founding the
Hapsburg dynasty in Spain; Cardinal Jimenez de Cisneros is
appointed Regent. Spain initially was most dissatisfied with being
placed under the rule of a foreigner. Whilst the various regions
provided him with financial support, they also offered advice and
criticism.
