Gaston de Foix defeats the Spanish and Papal forces at Ravenna with the help of German mercenaries, but Gaston's death in battle checks the French advance into Italy. Briefly seized by the French, Ravenna was afterwards in subjection to papal rule, with only minor intermissions until 1859. In 1861 it became part of Italy.
