The Sultan Bayezid was occupied with Europe and had mystical inclinations which made him sympathetic towards the rebels. These were promoting a heterodox Shiism in response to the orthodox Sufism of the Empire. Finally concerns of Bayezid's ability to rightly manage the Empire led the janissaries to replace him with his warlike son, Selim.
