Francisco d'Almeida, the Portuguese viceroy of the Indies, defeats the Moslem princes of north-west India at the battle of Diu (Gujarat). His victories drive the Ottomans and Egyptians to retreat from India, ensuring Portugal a virtual trade monopoly in the Indian Ocean until the 17th century.
