Spain and Portugal divide the western hemisphere between themselves: the treaty grants lands west of the line of demarcation (370 leagues west of the cape Verde Islands) to Spain and those east of the line to Portugal. This superseded the previous line set by Pope Alexander VI in his Bulls of Donation, which was felt to be too advantageous to Spain.
