Simultaneously with Bartolome Dias, Pêro da Covilhã set out traveling secretly overland and reached Ethiopia. From there he sailed on to Cannanore and Calicut, to Goa and Hormuz, then back to the Red Sea and Cairo. Afterwards he made an excursion down the East African coast to the islands now known as Madagascar.
