Portuguese explorers reach the mouth of the rivers Senegal and Gambia. Using the caravel (a small ship able to sail windward more than any other in Europe at the time), systematic exploration continued ever more southerly, reaching Senegal and Cape Verde Peninsula in 1445 and in 1446.
