Niccolo Conti was a Venetian merchant who travelled widely throughout India, the Midde-East and South-East Asia. His travels are recorded as the Pope required him to recount these as penance for his failure to practise Christianity throughout his journeys. The Pope's secretary, Poggio Bracciolini, was one of the finest humanist scholars of the day, so it produce a work of significant cultural and historical importance.
