Timbuktu had been founded by the Tuaregs. Gradually, however, it
had been incorporated within the Mali Empire. In 1433 the Tuaregs
regained control of the city. As a nomadic people, though, they
ruled from the desert and required tribute. Intellectual life
continued to flourish.
