Between the English capture of Calais, in 1347, and the Battle of Crecy in 1356, the conflict between France and England that would become known as the Hundred Years' War saw a lull in proceedings. This largely resulted from the arrival in Europe of the Black Death in 1350. This devastating pandemic, now agreed to have been a manifestation of bubonic plague, killed between 30 and 60 per cent of Europe's population.
