Edward Bruce was the younger brother of Robert the Bruce (Robert I of Scotland). When, after a campaign of almost a decade, Robert had secured his hold over the Scottish throne in 1314, he was not content to rest upon his laurels. In the wake of his military success over Edward II of England, Robert embarked on a plan to invade and conquer Ireland, ostensibly to free it from current English rule. He had some early success here, and Edward Bruce was even crowned High King of Ireland in 1315. However, the Scots struggled to gain any support beyond Ulster - further south, the Irish saw a Scottish conquest as little preferable to that of the English - and in 1318, Edward was killed at the Battle of Faughart.
