Despite being crowned King of Scotland at Scone in 1306, Robert the Bruce spent the first decade of his reign battling against the domination of Edward I of England, who had claimed the Scottish throne for himself. One of Robert's strategies was to undertake raids south across the border, to inflict as much damage on the English as possible. The previous year had seen the raiders sweep through Northumberland and burnt the town of Corbridge. In 1312, they pushed even further into English territory, reaching as far south as Durham.
