Despite being crowned King of Scotland at Scone in 1306, Robert the Bruce spent the first decade of his reign battling against the domination of Edward I of England, who had claimed the Scottish throne for himself. 1311 saw a party under Robert's leadership push south across the border. Such raids were common, but this one was particularly damaging, as the raiders swept through Northumberland and burnt the town of Corbridge.
