With the fall of the Byzantine Empire the Knights Hospitaller occupied the island transforming it into an impregnable fortress which was to withstand many an attack until that of Suleiman the Magnificent. The Knights Hospitaller's later occupied the Kingdom of Sicily and the island of Malta.
