The foundation of Girton College, Cambridge, was a significant breakthrough in a long campaign for women's university education, as the first residential college for women offering degree-level studies. Prime movers in its establishment were Emily Davies, Barbara Bodichon and Lady Stanley. Davies, in particular, was emphatic that no academic concessions were to be made to their women students: although their supporter, the philosopher and economist Henry Sidgwick, suggested that an easier course of study might be designed for women, Davies insisted that their students should work for the same Honours degrees as the men of the other colleges.
