As the longest of any British monarchs (to date), the reign of Queen Victoria covers a period that resists generalisation in many ways. Among the things that changed over the course of her time on the throne was the population she ruled. The first half of the nineteenth century saw the population double, and the second half saw it more than double again, reaching 40 000 000 by the time of her death. Throughout her reign, Britain had a significant empire, but its possessions went from a collection of colonies, many run through local chiefs and princes, to a vast imperial machine overseen by British-trained civil servants and in competition with other European powers in Africa.
