The Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific
oceans, was officially opened on 15 August. The canal was
administered by the United States until 1979; that year the U.S.
ceded its control to the Panama Canal Commission. In December 1999,
complete control of the canal was given to the Panamanian
government.
