The Bill resulted from a petition organised by Barbara Leigh
Smith in 1856 and which had gained the support of many women active
in public life, notably Mrs Gaskell, Jane Loudon and Mary Howitt.
The bill was lost as a result of the general election in 1857 and
the successful passage of the Divorce Reform Act. It formed the
basis of the bill which was presented to parliament in April 1868
and which reached the statue book in August 1870.
