In order to avoid a full scale invasion by Soviet troops, the Romanian government, under pressure from both Moscow and Berlin, agrees to withdraw its troops and administration from the territories. From 1940 till 1941, and from 1944 till 1991, these territories were part of the Soviet Union, resulting in the creation inside USSR of the Moldavian SSR, precursor of the modern Republic of Moldova. The annexation was followed by all manner of persecutions, including arrests, executions and deportations in labor camps in Siberia, especially between 1940-1941 and 1944-1956.
