The Pitesti prison is remembered for the brainwashing experiments carried out by Communist authorities between 1949-1952, designed as a violent 're-education' system for a large category of undesirable and recalcitrant anti-communist political prisoners. Together with the labour camps of Goli Otok in former Yugoslavia, and those of the Danube-Black Sea Canal, it was one of the most violent and atrocious penitentiary systems in communist East-Central Europe.
