King Edward the Elder begins the conquest of the Viking-controlled area of England. In 917 he destroys East Anglia, and by 918 he will retake Mercia and the Danish areas of the Midlands. In 919 the Viking leader of Northumberland acknowledges Edward’s overall rule.
