The Danelaw defines the area of England settled by the Vikings that recognized Danish rather than English laws. The Danish laws held sway in the Kingdom of Northumbria and Kingdom of East Anglia, and part of Mercia (the five boroughs of Leicester, Nottingham, Derby, Stamford and Lincoln).
