The Slavic alphabet is created by Saints Cyril and Methodius, who were sent by Byzantine emperor Michael III as Orthodox Christian missionaries to convert the Slavs of Moravia. The alphabet was disseminated along with the Old Church Slavonic liturgical language. Today, dozens of languages in Eastern Europe and Asia are written in the Cyrillic alphabet, among which Bulgarian, Macedonian, Russian, Serbian and Ukrainian.
