Following the death of James V at Falkland Palace in the aftermath of his army's defeat at the Battle of Solway Moss, his six-day-old daughter Mary accedes to the throne. She is to become known as Mary Queen of Scots, and was to have a tumultuous reign. This was evident from the outset: the regency was claimed by two rival political figures, Cardinal Beaton and the next heir to the throne, the Earl of Arran.
